It’s Not My Job to Free Tibet

I hate saying that.  It feels so very wrong.  It’s not that I wouldn’t like to help them.  It’s not that I am not appalled at what is happening over there.  I have been wrestling with my guilty feelings lately.  What have I done to make the world a better place?  I started by taking inventory of the areas that I would love to ‘fix’.  My Save-the-World list looks like this:

ü Free Tibet – I want to give the Dali Lama and his people back their temples and their homes.  I am outraged at what is happening to the monks and the nuns that are still there.  It is amazing to me that our own government has not gone in and helped them the way they have recently helped free other people who are under ugly dictatorships.

ü Heal the hole in the ozone layer – I worry about what kind of air my grandchildren will have if something is not done soon.  It feels very irresponsible to leave it the way it is.

ü Cure Cancer and AIDS – I have had friends die from Cancer and I have a relative that has tested positive for AIDS.  As a child, I wanted to become a doctor so that I could cure Cancer.

ü Save the endangered species – Too many have already been killed off.  I cannot stand the idea of any more species disappearing.  I want to protect them all.

ü Overhaul the public school system – I would shift the finances around so that those who were actually working with the kids would make as much if not more money then the administrators.  I would have the mental attitudes of the teachers be more important then tenure when determining pay raises.

ü Raise my own kids – This is the most important work I will ever do during my lifetime.  I wish everyone took parenting the next generation as seriously as it should be.  I am a firm believer that our overall approach to life and mental health is taught to us before we have even started school.

ü Defend the gays and lesbians – I have always been sympathetic to the cause.  I hate the idea that people are treated badly just because of whom they sleep with at night.  I choose my friends by how well they treat me, not by who they fall in love with.

ü Teach people how to be happy – A long story, but let’s just say I made a promise to an old man spirit guide when I was a teenager and the promise haunts me to this day.

ü Solve world hunger – Seems ridiculous that in this time in history with all of our technology and the abundance of the planet that people are still going without the basic food they need to survive.  I would add to this the concept of getting full healthy nutrients back into our food supply too.

ü Find loving homes for the orphans – In my perfect world, orphanages would only house the kids for three or four months while the new parents are being screened.  No child would grow up in foster care or in orphanages.  They would all have loving healthy homes.

ü Save the rainforest – I would also make sure the Redwoods and other places of sacred nature were protected.  In my opinion, mankind has enough land for himself… the rest needs to be left alone and protected as parks and nature reserves.

ü Rid the planet of pollution – I really think that if we put our technology towards this subject, there is no reason whatsoever for us to be polluting any part of the planet.  It is extremely selfish of us not to clean up after ourselves.  We have behaved like awful house guests.

ü Implement a clean economical fuel system – This is a piece of the pollution thing but also about the financial needs for a less expensive fuel system.

ü Design a quality inexpensive health care system – I would work to make sure that money never stopped people from receiving the health care that they need.  This would also include getting preventative health care and health education out to everyone, too.

ü End divorces and broken homes – I do not have a clue how to do this, but I would love to find a way.  The old ideas of staying married even if you hate your spouse are never going to work again.  The new ideas of revolving door marriages are not working either.  Somehow, I would want to teach people how to have happy long-term marriages with happy children as a normal way of life.

ü Clean out the political system – Originally our forefathers had real jobs and real incomes of their own.  Holding a public office was done as a service to your community, not as a form of ego gratification or as a way to control and manipulate people.  I would find out what the average middle-class income range is, and that is all anyone could earn as a politician.  No laws would be passed without full disclosure to the people in plain language that the least educated could comprehend.

ü Create world peace – I have really no idea how to do that.  I just want it.

ü Find Atlantis and solve the mystery of the pyramids – This is just something that has always fascinated me.  It may or may not benefit mankind, but I think it would be really cool.

ü Scientifically prove somebody’s religion is true – I figure that if we could prove beyond a doubt that somebody’s religion is definitely 100% real and true, then we would not need to have religious wars anymore.  We could stop fighting over exactly how spirituality should be practiced.

ü Psychologically heal the inmates who want it – Prison should be lousy and miserable or else people won’t want to stay out.  However, I think that people who really want to change the way they behave and the way they make choices, should have full access to quality mental health professionals who are really devoted to helping them turn themselves around.

ü End all superficial fakeness – A personal pet peeve.  I hate being lied to and I do not like shallow superficial relationships.  I want real heart-to-heart connections or none at all.  I would have this be the way even in big country-to-country relationships.  Governments should be open and honest just like the people they represent.  It is my own little fantasy.

ü Save the children – I financially supported the Save the Children campaign as a starving college student and it was one of the most emotionally satisfying things I have ever done.  I loved getting those hand-written letters from the little girl in Sri Lanka and feeling like I was making a difference in her life.

ü Stop racism – Skin color is a stupid thing to fight about.  I really do not grasp the concept.  It just seems so incredibly ridiculous to put so much hatred into something like that.  I could see hating a murderer or a rapist, but a skin color?  It just does not make logical sense to me.

ü Bring an end to lethargy – America has spent too long avoiding our lives through drugs, alcohol, and by living on antidepressants.  How are we supposed to fix the problems in society if we cannot even get up off of our couches?

ü Stop terrorism – I like to believe that if some of the other things on my list were accomplished, then people would not want to terrorize each other as individuals, as religions, as skin colors, as genders, nor as countries.

ü Save the coral reefs – This is another piece of the whole take care of our planet concept.  Clean water, clean oceans.  Take care of our natural treasures.  Respect the amazing and beautiful gifts we have been given.

ü Change America’s focus from being ‘politically correct’ to becoming ‘spiritually correct’ – I am not talking about religion but about having a spiritual approach towards each other rather than a political approach towards others.  Choosing spiritually correct leaders is not about having religious leaders controlling us, but having the individuals chosen be of a soulful mindset that truly embraces the sacredness of all faiths and paths.

As you can see, it is a long list and it is all very overwhelming.  How can I ever accomplish all of these things in my lifetime?  I cannot possibly hope to solve all of the world’s problems.  I have thought about getting up on my soapbox and preaching to everyone that they need to come help me with all of these projects.  There is just so much that needs done and you and I both know that there are items that I have forgotten to add to my list.  I will be lucky if I can make a real difference in even one of those areas during my lifetime.

I had to sit and really think about my own resources, the natural gifts I was born with, and what amount of time I want to commit to doing good deeds.  I had to analyze the list and what it would really take to accomplish each of those things.  What I came to realize is that there are some that I am spiritually called to do, some that I just want to do, and still others that I secretly wish someone else would do.  That is not a bad thing; it is what it is.  The things that I am spiritually called to do also happen to be the things that fall into my natural gifts and talents.  The things that I secretly hope someone else will do usually involve things that I have no idea how to do.  I may really want to cure Cancer and other diseases, but I know that deep down I do not have any resources, skills, training, or education to apply to the problem.  It’s really not my job.  All I can do is to support those who are meant to do that work.  If I had the money, I would dump a fortune into their pockets to make sure they had all of the tools they needed.

What if I do a little bit for each and every one?  They say, “Every little bit counts!”  If all I was giving was my money, then I would say yes, donate money to all of those causes.  But, that is not what I am talking about.  I am talking about actually rolling up my sleeves and getting to work helping make the world a better place.  I personally cannot fly all over the planet adding just a touch of my energy here and there.  To truly create the huge changes needed to fix those problems, I would have to really give my undivided attention and focus.  One hundred people giving a moment of their time is not as effective and powerful as just two or three people giving it all of their time and focus.  If I am going to make a difference, then I will have to narrow the list down.

One by one, I had to scratch off the list those things that I personally could not do.  That is not to say that I will not someday be able to help finance them.  For now, I have to look at what I can actually roll my sleeves up and do with my own two hands.  What are my talents best used for?  What is my job?  I picked from the list those things that were truly deeply spiritually mine.  They are all areas that I also happen to feel a personal calling to be involved in.  Everything else, I have to let go and trust that someone else will recognize that they have the talents and resources to become part of the solutions.  I have to trust that whoever is meant to take on those jobs will feel a calling deep in their soul and that they’ll heed that calling.

Another hard part for me is not knowing the divine plan.  When bad things happen, we can take comfort in knowing that there must be some divine reason.  There is always a lesson to be learned.  Somehow, the challenges and dramas of life always lead to enlightenment, joy, new self-esteem, or some other cosmic gift.  Some bad things are just meant to be even if I do not know the reason why.  So, as I let go of each item, I take a deep breath and trust that someone else is going to pick up that particular problem and give their life to solving it.  I also have to make peace with the idea that it may not happen the way I would like to see it happen, or along the timeline that I would like to see it happen.  Who will free Tibet while I am busy working on fixing these other things?  Will those people be saved in a timely manner?  Will our government dive in to save them the way they have felt called to save other people in other countries?  I can only pray that someone else picks up the baton because I cannot.  What about you?  Is it your job?  Will you free Tibet?
