A Christmas Wish
My friends and family all know that I use them as my muses when I’m writing. Some of them have begged me to never reveal their identities and so for their sakes, “The names have been changed to protect the innocent, the beautiful, and the ugly.”
I know a woman I will call “Fairy.” I will call her that because she is a New Age type of a person. Her friend is a woman I will call “Angel.” I will call her friend that because she is a more traditional Christian. And so their story begins…
Fairy and Angel met when they were both young girls in school and became wonderfully close friends. They shared good times and bad as they went through middle school and high school together. They were part of a larger group of friends and at times they were very close and at other times they drifted apart. However, they both knew that they would be there for each other if they ever needed someone to lean on or to celebrate life with. They went on their first wild teenage road trip together. They shared the secrets of their dating lives with each other. They fully supported each other when it was time to leave high school and go out into the world as adults. That first summer after graduation, Angel found her soulmate and moved away to begin her “happily ever after.” Without meaning to, the girls lost touch for many years.
Fairy went away to college, fell in love, got pregnant, dropped out of school, and got dumped. Then she fell in love again, got pregnant again, and got dumped again. She struggled without a support system for many years trying to raise her babies all alone. People were quick to judge her, but slow to help. She spent many years falling in and out of love, but never finding that special someone who would love her and her babies. During one of the toughest parts of her life, God sent the Messengers down to tell her that she was not forgotten and that the reason she had suffered so much loneliness and heartache was because she was to teach “happiness” to the lost and lonely souls of the planet. She was sure that the Messengers had mistaken her for someone else. She was not the kind of person that people would listen to when it came to matters of happiness and joy. Who could possibly learn from her when she was still so miserable?
As time went on, the Messengers eventually persuaded Fairy that she did have a special purpose and that the work she would do would be holy and divinely inspired. So upon their assurances that she and her children would never starve or become homeless, she quit her ‘real job’ to go to work for God and his Messengers. She worked harder than she had ever worked before. She was used to working hard though, because she had always struggled and scrapped for every little thing that her children needed. She didn’t mind the long hours and occasional headaches that came from working for the Messengers, because they were much kinder and more appreciative of her efforts than any ‘real’ boss she had ever known. The thing that always struck her as odd and a bit frustrating was that she was never paid for her work. Somehow people would drift in and out of her life and they would subsidize her so that she could continue working. The agreement had been that the Messengers would not allow her and her children to suffer hunger or homelessness, so technically they were keeping their end of the deal even though it meant that Fairy was always obligated to keep her benefactors happy in order to keep the money coming in.
One day, Angel contacted Fairy to let her know that she and her family had come back to live in the same area. The girls were immediately reconnected again. It was sometimes difficult for Angel to relate to Fairy’s New Age beliefs and her choice to work for the Messengers rather than to get a ‘real job’ and become truly free and independent from the influence of others. As time went on, Angel began to see what working for the Messengers meant to Fairy and that even though they may not agree about all things spiritual, they did agree that Fairy’s work could help lots of people. It meant so much to Fairy to have Angel’s love and support.
One year at Christmas time, Fairy was in a really tough place. Her benefactor was not giving her nearly enough money to live off of any more and she had nobody else to turn to. Her spiritual work was not bringing in much money at all because the same people that she wanted to help were angry with her for putting a price tag on her work. They felt that Fairy should work for free if she was really working for the Messengers and not simply working for greed. This attitude hurt Fairy, but she still continued giving her gift to the world even if some people were so unappreciative. The letters that she received from those who had been helped by her work touched her so deeply that she would often cry just to imagine that she had been so privileged as to be allowed to help them. But all of the love letters and fan mail could not save her from the financial problems that had escalated due to her lack of income.
Her car had been dead for months, her utilities were all about to be shut off, and there was no money to give her children any kind of a Christmas celebration. People did not want to help her because she was a big girl and had made her own choices. They would rather give anonymously to charities rather than help someone they knew personally. Finally, Fairy prayed to the Messengers telling them that she desperately needed help.
The next day, she called Angel and asked her for help running an errand. She needed for Angel to pick up an item and deliver it for her. Angel went a step further, she paid to fix Fairy’s car so that she and her children would be able to drive back and forth to the grocery store and to run errands whenever she needed to. Angel wanted Fairy to be able to take her children to the doctors, to buy medicine in the middle of the night, or wherever else they might need to go if an emergency situation should occur. So, when Angel showed up the next morning to deliver the item, she informed Fairy that she was paying to fix the car. Angel had given Fairy back some freedom and mobility as a Christmas gift. Fairy cried because it had been many years since anyone had been so kind towards her.
After Angel left that morning, Fairy went back to her desk to continue working. The local morning radio show was in the holiday spirit and decided to have listeners call in and share their “Pay It Forward” stories. As Fairy listened to all of these amazingly beautiful stories of people giving anonymously to families in need over the holidays, she wept again. Some of the callers had been the recipients and others the givers. They all were moved and forever changed by the experiences. Fairy knew that the best way for her to “Pay It Forward” was to keep doing the spiritual work that the Messengers had asked of her. After all, they were the ones who had sent Angel to help her. They would see to it that Fairy and her children were taken care of.
For various reasons, both of these women want me to keep their names out of the story. But the story is beautiful and needed to be shared. My Christmas wish for this year is that all of you who have been called upon to work for the Messengers will know that your work matters and you will be taken care of. And to all of you who have not been called to work, but know that you have the means to love and support those who do the work of God, please remember to do what you can to look after those in need. God bless the fairies and the angels and protect them both throughout the year.
